There are many different hearing instruments available. The two major components to consider is the style (the way it looks on your ear) and the technology (they way it works or sounds). At South County Hearing we believe the technology a patient should wear has mainly to do with their life style. If a patient has a more active life style and finds themselves in a variety of listening situations then they should consider purchasing devices that are as high in technology as they are comfortable a

Hearing Loss Help » Hearing Loss and Following Directions

by Neil Bauman, Ph.D.

A recent study confirmed what I have known for decades, namely, that hard of hearing people often strain so hard to catch the words in instructions that they don’t accurately retain the instructions themselves. So never blame a hard of hearing person for not following your instructions or directions unless you have written them down and given them to the hard of hearing person.

Dr. Arthur Wingfield at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts in a recent article in Current Directions in Psychological Science concluded that older adults with mild-to-moderate hearing loss may expend so much cognitive energy on hearing accurately that their ability to remember spoken language suffers as a result.

This is also true of younger people, and those with more severe hearing losses too. I know this well. It has been my experience all my life. (I was born with a severe hearing loss.) I ask a person for directions, but in the process of straining to hear (and understand) them, I spend so much mental effort trying to get the directions straight, that the message itself doesn’t stick in my brain. I may be sure I understand the directions or instructions, but when I go to follow the instructions, I realize I don’t have a clue what I am really supposed to do. This is embarrassing to say the least–so much so that I don’t want to go back and ask for the directions all over again.

Therefore, whenever you are giving instructions or directions to hard of hearing people, you are far better off writing them down at the outset, rather than verbally telling them (likely over and over until you are both frustrated), because hard of hearing people very likely will have garbled your carefully explained directions before they even get out the door!

Hearing Loss Help » Rate Your Ear Doctor

by Neil Bauman, Ph.D.

Some people have suggested that I keep a list of the particularly good doctors for treating various ear conditions–and a separate list for the bad ones. I like this suggestion, but I do not have the time to do this either. Furthermore, it is not my focus.

Fortunately, such a service already exists, although I didn’t know about it either until a lady brought it to my attention a few days ago.

Here’s the deal. Go to Rate Your MD  where you can look up doctors by state and see what others have said about them. You are then free to leave your comments, based on your own experiences with this doctor–whether good or bad.

I especially encourage you to leave comments about good ear specialists so others will know who is particularly good for the various ear conditions for which you have gone to that doctor.

As of today, 58,677 doctors have been rated on this site at least once. There are now more than 97,000 ratings on this site with roughly 2,000 to 3,000 being added daily. If this keeps up eventually, people will have a fairly reliable source of finding good doctors and avoiding bad doctors.

As you might expect, the bad doctors are opposed to this site, while the good doctors welcome it.

I encourage you to do your part to warn others of the bad doctors out there, and point them to the competent, caring, knowledgeable doctors that can help them. This is one positive way you can help!
